Indigenous Relations

The Victoria Family Court and Youth Justice Committee (VFCYJC) is committed to establishing new relationships based on mutual recognition and respect with First Nations upon whose unceded ancestral lands we reside. This commitment will soon formally become not only a moral obligation, but a legal one when the government of British Columbia’s Bill of Rights Legislation upholding the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) is enacted. The legislation, a collaboration between the Ministry of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation and, the First Nations Leadership Council, is intended to provide a framework for the province to align its laws with the UNDRIP’s 46 articles that protect both the collective and individual rights of Indigenous people, including their right to self-determination.
